Naturally occuring Acetyl L-Carnitine (ALCAR) is a form of the amino acid L-Carnitine, which is found in almost all cells of the body.
Unlike other forms of carnitine, Acetyl L-Carnitine has the ability to pass through the Blood-brain barrier. Once it reaches the brain, it acts as a powerful antioxidant and can protect the brain from free radicals. Besides for its antioxidant properties, the ‘acetyl’ element of ALCAR is involved in the formation of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter which is critical for maintaining healthy brain cell function. This can include mental alertness, memory, focus and concentration.
L-Carnitine as an amino acid in involved in the process of supplying energy to cells. Because heart muscle tissue requires a lot of energy, ALCAR is particularly important for maintaining a strong heart.
