Researchers have found that people with Alzheimer's disease have low levels of SAM-e. The reasons for this are unknown. Dr. Morrison at the University of Toronto examined the post-mortem brains of 11 patients with Alzheimer's disease. He found greatly decreased levels of SAM-e. This finding suggested to him that low levels of SAM-e "are not simply a consequence of chronic neurodegenerative condition". SAM-e helps increase cell permeability and thus improves flow of neurotransmitters.*
