The #1 cause of death in the United States is Cardiovascular Disease (CVD). More people die from it than cancer, infectious diseases, and murder combined. The idea that SAM-e may play a key part in CVD was presented by Dr. Franziska Loerhrer and his team at a University Hospital in Switzerland. Dr. Loerhrer noticed that high levels of homocysteine and low levels of SAM-e, age, and body mass play a roll in the disease process. Dr. Loerhrer explained the link of high homocysteine levels, coronary artery disease, and SAM-e in a study published in 1996 on arteriosclerosis, thrombosis and vascular biology. SAM-e plays a roll in the process that allows the conversion of homocysteine to take place. Researchers found that patients with coronary artery disease often had low levels of SAM-e.*
