SAM-e's roll in aging is tied with its extensive involvement in so many of the body’s functions . SAM-e is essential for the synthesis of neurotransmitters, DNA, and phosphatidylcholine, a substance that keeps the cell membranes flexible and allows cells to more efficiently pass nutrients and wastes through their walls. SAM-e is also the precursor to powerful antioxidants that fight the free radicals involved in aging. This may be the most important role SAM-e plays in aging. By providing the brain and the rest of the body with antioxidants, SAM-e helps neutralize free radicals. Free radicals are found in the fat of the brain (the brain is more than 50% fat), thus destruction of the nerve cells and neurotransmitters in the brain increases as we age.*
