SAM-e vs. St. Johns Wort
Just a few years ago, St. Johns Wort garnered most of the attention for its
roll in mood enhancement. Now clinicians are asking, how does SAM-e compare
to St. Johns Wort?
A 1996 meta-analysis revealed that St. Johns Wort has been used in 23 randomized
trials, featuring nearly 1,800 outpatients diagnosed with mild to moderate
depression. A review of studies and scientific literature indicates that not
only many more studies where done on SAM-e but that the studies have been
done over more than 20 years. They where double blind studies done by respected
doctors and universities in highly controlled environments. Some of the differences
between the two products are listed below:
SAM-e starts to take effect much more rapidly, many patients experience a
noticeable difference within days. In contrast St. Johns Wort may take weeks
or months to take effect.
St. Johns Wort is considered effective in promoting mood. SAM-e has been studied
and used successfully for much more than mood enhancement. SAM-e has also
been used in combination with some prescription drugs and medications.
St. Johns Wort has been shown in some cases to raise blood pressure. SAM-e,
however, has been shown in studies to help lower the risk of heart disease.
As stated in the international journal of medicine Nov/Dec 1999, St. Johns
Wort has shown side effects like nausea, skin rash, photosensitivity, and
loss of libido. SAM-e however appears to be free from major side effects even
at higher doses.
SAM-e has been researched for over 20 years, and has been used for over twenty
years, however St. Johns Wort is much newer with not nearly as much research
to back its claims.
SAM-e has been researched and used for over 20 years. St. John’s Wort,
however, is relatively new. SAM-e has also been studied for use in patients
with:
SAM-e is involved in approximately 40 biochemical reactions. Here are just
a few:
- Necessary for the synthesis of neurotransmitters in the brain, including
serotonin and dopamine, which results in an enhanced mood.*
- Facilitates the chemical process involved in the control of the
inflammation and pain of Osteoarthritis and other inflammations resulting
in pain relief.*
- Promotes the production of antioxidants. Also promotes several essential
biochemical reactions such as detoxification of cells, which helps rid the
body of various disease causing substances.*
- It supports vital functions that maintain a healthy liver.*
- It protects the body against the harmful impact of homocysteine,
a substance that has a negative affect on the heart and cardiovascular health.*
- Helps in the synthesis of melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate
the awake sleep cycle.*
Scientific literature indicates that SAM-e has numerous health and medical
applications. On a cellular level, SAM-e maintains mitochondrial function,
prevents DNA mutations, and restores cellular membrane fluidity so that cell
receptors are better able to bind hormones and other factors. SAM-e is the
most active methyl donor in your body, meaning it donates methyl groups to
other chemical compounds in your body including neurotransmitters, changing
them into other compounds. SAM-e helps regulate these neurotransmitters. It
is also required for sulfur containing compounds, such as glutathione, which
is a powerful antioxidant in the body that helps fight off substances that
damage our cells, particularly in the liver. SAM-e is involved in maintaining
and manufacturing cartilage components. Because of the different reactions
SAM-e is involved in, its benefits vary from joint and liver health, to mood
enhancement.*
